The consumption of 20.5 MMT (million metric tonnes) of pellets during 2015 made the EU the world’s largest wood pellet market. By 2017, the demand is expected to expand to nearly 22.5 MMT.
With a production of about 13.5 MMT in 2015, about 50% of global production, the EU is the world’s biggest producer of wood pellets. Compared to production plants in North America, plants in the EU are mainly small or medium-sized.
