Helen Ltd builds the largest pellet heating plant in Finland

Finnish utility Helen Ltd reported plans for building a pellet-fired heating plant, with fuel capacity of about 100 MW. The project is part of their new renewable energy commitments and is expected to be completed in 2018, according to SeeNews Renewables.
Valmet Corp was selected to build the plant on a EUR 20 million contract, starting late 2016. The location for the facility was chosen at the site of a dismantled oil-fired heating plant in the Salmisaari power plant area and is due to combust almost 21 tonnes of wood pellets per hour when working at full capacity. Also, the heating plant will use 40,000 tonnes per year.
The energy which will be produced by the plant will heat around 25,000 one-bedroom apartments, with a district heat output of about 92 MW, as reported by SeeNews Renewables.

“The project will support the development of Finnish energy technology and increase the level of employment in pellet manufacture and logistics,” Helen director, Heikki Hapuli, noted.

This would be the largest pellet boiler in Finland and one of the largest renewable energy investments by now. Also, the company’s plan is to achieve climate-neutral energy production by 2050.
