U.S.: Mary’s River Lumber Co. closes down

Mary’s River Lumber Co. ended its operations at the cedar sawmill from Philomath and the finishing plant in Corvallis, after 42 years of operations. The U.S. Benton County-based company had 80 workers, out of which 42 had already been dismissed, according to Corvallis Gazette-Times.

Brad Kirkbride, company President, said that this event comes after a tough time trying to find suitable cedar logs, because of harvesting restrictions on the public forests.

“It’s a sad moment, but there comes a point where with this extreme shortage of logs, you just don’t see a future. We fought this thing for a long time trying to keep the business open. This is a situation where it isn’t going to get any better. It’s been rough,” he added.

The operations will continue until this summer, as to sell the rest of the goods and market its facilities for an easier sale.

The Mary’s River Lumber Company has other facilities in Montesano, Washington and Bow, Washington and is mainly producing siding, decking and boards for trim.
