Myanmar: 10% tax on sawnwood exports starting April 1

The Parliament in Myanmar has now confirmed the 10% Special Commodity Tax on all sawn timber export and local sales.  This tax and the zero tax on finished products will come into force 1 April this year. It is understood that the private sector and Forestry Department are now discussing what products are included in the term sawn timber.  A domestic newspaper, Yangon Times Journal, quoted a former Secretary of a timber association as contending that teak is itself a high value product so all teak products could be deemed high value.
