Swedish softwood timber exports fall sharply, but shipments to China rise steady

In the first seven months of 2016, Sweden has exported 7,2 million m3 of softwood timber. This represents a -6% decrease over the same period of 2015 (7,7 million m3). Most of the exports to the world decreased as compared to last year.

The main export markets for Swedish softwood timber were the United Kingdom (1,4 million m3), Egypt (711 379 m3), Norway (534 630 m3) and Germany (523 150 m3).

In particular, exports to China and Japan, increased by 43% and 16% respectively. Softwood timber exports to China reached to a volume of 460,860 m3, while the exports volume to Japan amounted to 433,193 m3.

Swedish timber shipments to the European Union countries decreased by -8%, to 3,6 million m3, from the 4 million m3 reached during January-July 2015. Also, the exports to North Africa decreased by -15%, to 1,3 million m3. Swedish timber exports to North America and Near and Middle East dropped by -15% and -18% respectively.

Yet, Sweden's exports of timber to Asia grew by 28% in volume, as compared to the same period last year, amounting to 1 million m3.
