The US wood pellets exports to the European Union countries continue to increase as in recent years. During the first six months of 2016, the EU countries have imported 46% more wood pellets from the US, as compared to the corresponding period of 2015.Thus, the US now covers almost a third (36%) of all EU worldwide pellet purchases, being its major source.
The United Kingdom is the main importer of wood pellets from the US, major UK power plants such as Drax are currently undergoing major coal-biomass conversion plans. During January-July, the UK imported 1,90 million tonnes of wood pellets from the US (+56% yoy). UK is now covering 84.9% of the overall European wood pellet imports from the US.
